O...My mom said they used to render lard every year. Once year her mom and dad caught the kitchen on fire while rendering lard. They decided to stop. It should be noted that my mom and her parents walk away and forget about things. I do not know if that was the case with the lard. I do suggest being very careful if you decide to render it though. I'll ask my Mamaw this week about her lard rendering experiences.
I usually use vegetable oil.Tabithahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07704742484546019995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-297845704195585983.post-15653128143808986522009-11-23T01:59:55.429-06:002009-11-23T01:59:55.429-06:00@ Grace: Others have said it's as easy as putt...@ Grace: Others have said it's as easy as putting a pot on the stove (and opening a window)!

@ Megan: Oh, now I actually have to try coconut oil! (Here's a restaurant in Maine that specializes in this...would love to go there sometime. www.duckfat.com) We actually do have some "homemade" lard and duck fat from when we were farming in Vermont. But I have to say we don't use it very often; I think frying in vegetable oil is still healthier. (sorry, no citation!)
@Grace - I keep a fire extinguisher nearby whenever my husband fries things!Melaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11838060679065966928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-297845704195585983.post-88310267338012356812009-11-21T18:07:19.086-06:002009-11-21T18:07:19.086-06:00Interesting post.
